Whether it’s a short weekend break or a two week-long trip abroad, nobody likes to return home to a messy house. Here are some top tips to follow, that will ensure that you return to an organised, tidy and clean haven!
1. Tidy up – Get rid of any unwanted items that are lying around by putting them away, where they belong.
2. Vacuum or sweep – A quick whiz around with the vacuum will make a noticeable difference when you return to your house.
3. Unplug appliances – Although it’s unlikely that you will have an electrical fire in your home whilst your away, ensure all appliances are switched off at the wall just incase. This will help save pennies on your electric bill too.
4. Empty rubbish and recycling bins – Make sure, before you go away, you take your bins out – you do not want to come home to the stale smell of mouldy food and waste from your bins! If you are away for a long period of time, ask a neighbour or a family member to put your bins out on collection day.
5. Ensure there are no dirty dishes – Wash up or load the dishwasher before you leave as unclean dishes will go mouldy.
6. Clean surfaces – Clean work tops and spaces to make sure there is no food residue, again, which will create mould and a fowl smell.
7. Change bedding – Although changing bedding will seem like the last thing you want to do before leaving for your holiday, imagine coming home to clean sheets! There is nothing like sleeping in your own bed after some time away, so make it extra special with some fresh sheets.
8. Sort laundry – Whether you want to shove a load on, chuck items in the laundry basket or fold up a pile of clean clothes to one side, make sure your laundry is organised for when you get home! You will be returning with a suitcase of dirty clothes, so the more organised you are before your trip, the less stressful your washing errands will be when you’re back!
9. Have someone stop by – Depending on the length of your trip, it might be helpful to have a neighbour or family member check in on your home whilst you’re away. For lengthy trips, somebody could water your plants, put the bins out for collection, and make sure everything is ok – so you can be worry-free on holiday!
10. Replace towels – By replacing damp, used towels in your bathroom you can eliminate the smell of damp while you’re away. Fresh towels are also nice to come home to, especially if you’re needing a shower after a long trip!
Holidays can be stressful, especially with lots of packing and unpacking to do. By following these top tips, you’ll have less to worry about and you may even look forward to getting home!
