This week we have been discussing different hacks and advice that we can give you guys to try at home. Not only that we’ve scoured the web, searched social media platforms, and even put the question to our Instagram followers. And so here is our list of cleaning hacks, some whackier than others, some more effective than others – and as commercial cleaners, there are some here that we haven’t even tried – so we urge you to try them out in your home and let us know what you think!
- Use Baking Soda to clean – baking soda can be used to clean pretty much anything in your home. It’s great for unclogging drains and removing odours. Please check whether it’s safe to use with pets in the house before being too frivolous though!
- Disinfect your dishcloths – a regular washing cycle will not kill all the germs and bacteria from your cleaning cloths, so disinfect these separately in the sink with some hot water and disinfectant or microwave them!
- Use essential oils – Essential oils can have great antibacterial properties, but they also smell great! Put a few drops of essential oils on some cotton wall and place it at the bottom of your bathroom bin (lined with a bin bag!)
- Use a dishwasher tablet to clean your sofa – now this was a hack we found on online, but the results look amazing! Dissolve a dishwashing tablet in a bowl with hot water, cover a saucepan lid in a microfibre cloth, then dip the lid into the water and use the lid to go over your sofas!
- Always use a dry cleaning cloth for screens to prevent smearing!
- Use white vinegar to remove stains on stainless steel items – great to use in the bathroom on taps and/or to remove grime on your shower head!
- Use fewer products – it’s so much effort having different cleaning products for different rooms when most anti-bacterial sprays or disinfectants will do the same job, in every room! You will be more likely to want to clean knowing you no longer need to battle to carry around a vast amount of bottles and sprays!
- Use a toothbrush to clean – scrub those hard-to-get areas with a toothbrush, especially effective for when you’re cleaning the cracks and crevices of your computer keyboard!
- Need to clean your blender? Just fill it with hot water and dish soap and turn it on!
- Vodka can be used to remove mould and mildew – use 50:50 parts water and vodka and leave on mouldy surfaces for 10 minutes then rinse! A great alternative to using chemicals!
- Don’t throw away old clothes or odd socks – make cleaning rags out of them instead (old socks are perfect for getting in between blinds!)
- Utilise your dishwasher – clean your fridge shelves, hairbrushes, shower heads, and any items that need cleaning in the dishwasher!
- Clean your microwave – get a bowl of water and lemon, place it in your microwave and put it on for 5 minutes. The steam and the lemon will release grease, once the 5 minutes is up, simply wipe it down!
- The last one is very random, and we can’t say at Exeter Cleaning we’ve tried this ourselves but pour Coca-Cola around the rim of your toilet bowl and leave this for an hour, then scrub! Apparently, doing this will help remove tough stains!
Please let us know if you have tried and tested these hacks! We’d love to hear what you think!
