Cleaning myths to stop wasting your time with!

  • by

Here at Exeter Cleaning, we have scoured the internet for all the cleaning myths we could find and uncovered the truth behind them – fake news! So here is a list of cleaning myths to stop wasting your time with!

  • Newspaper works best for cleaning glass

The best way to clean glass is with a microfibre cloth. The newspaper will get wet and fall apart!

  • Use Vinegar to clean everything

Using vinegar may not be as effective as you may think. It’s also best to check which surfaces it’s safe to use it on, due to its acidity this may damage some surfaces.

  • Use Coca-Cola to clean the toilet

So, we actually mentioned this in a blog post we wrote previously and now we’ve tried and tested it we can safely say avoid this myth! Over time the fizzy drink will stain your bowl and overall, it’s just not effective in cleaning and disinfecting your toilet bowl.

  • Hand-washing is better than using the dishwasher

We have done our research and have found out that using the dishwasher is more cost-effective than hand-washing your dirty dishes. Recent studies state that hand-washing dishes use more water and energy, making dishwashers the more efficient choice. Not to mention the dishwasher sanitizes your items more effectively! It’s a no-brainer – no more standing at the sink!

  • Use bleach for everything

Using bleach all over your house is unsafe and can cause damage to surfaces! Use sparingly and check where is safe to do so – i.e. not around pets and children.

  • Use a tea bag to deodorise smelly shoes

This one is very ineffective. We recommend using bicarb or baking soda instead, but again please be wary if you have children or pets about!

  • Washing machines and dishwashers clean themselves

This isn’t true and they do in fact need to be maintained. Looking after your appliances means they will work more effectively and have a longer lasting life.
