The weather has been hot all over the UK and especially in the South-West. BBQing is becoming even more popular and everyone seems to be getting more adventurous. Cleaning BBQ’s afterwards can be a pain especially charcoal ones. Here we look at ways that this job can be made easier, some that you’ve probably not heard of before.
Easy hacks to clean your BBQ with household products
When the weather is as beautiful as this, it’s time to get the BBQ out.
Newspaper
Instead of spending a long time scrubbing at the grill, cleaning expert Heather Barrigan says the key is to loosen the dirt with newspaper.
She said: ‘When the warm weather settles in, you will start to use your BBQ more, which means it will need to be cleaned regularly to ensure you are cooking in a clean and safe manner.
‘One of the quickest and easiest ways to clean your BBQ is by steam cleaning it. For this method, all you need to do is soak a newspaper and place it on top of the grill. You should then close the lid and leave the paper on the grill for around thirty minutes to give it a thorough steam clean.’
Coffee
While newspaper might help dislodge most of the grease, you might have a few tougher bits left.
‘For stubborn stains, you should soak your grill and BBQ utensils in coffee. There is an acid in coffee that will help loosen burnt food remains or other hard to remove stains,’ Heather adds.
Vinegar
You can also try a vinegar solution, which can be useful around the home.
Mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle then spray onto the grill. Leave it for 10 minutes and then start scrubbing.
Baking soda
Another common household product that can be used for both cooking and cleaning is baking soda.
Just make a paste with the soda and water and spread it over the grill. Leave for 30 minutes and then scrub it off with a sponge.
Onion
Once you’ve got it clean, use an onion to make it easier next time.
Let your grill cool slightly (while you eat whatever you’ve cooked), then cut an onion in half and attach it to a fork, rubbing it over the hot bars to dislodge the food.
