Cleaning tips to help reduce your energy bills!

With the current cost of living crisis and our ever-rising bills now is the time to save money wherever we can! Here at Exeter Cleaning, we have put together a list of cleaning and household tips that will help reduce your energy bills and ultimately save you some cash this winter.

  • Be vigilant with your vacuum

We know, what a tip – vacuum less! But, did you know your vacuum cleaner uses more energy than a lot of your other appliances? Obviously, this depends on what model/make you have so it may be worth upgrading yours to a more modern, energy-efficient vacuum. Alternatively, try and use your vacuum less, this is especially easy if you have hardwood flooring, tiles, or laminate flooring. Time to start sweeping!

  • Re-wear clothes

Are you the type of person who will wear something once and chuck it in the laundry basket at the end of the day? Well, truthfully if your clothes don’t smell or look dirty, there’s no reason why you can’t wear them again. If there’s a bit of dirt or muck on an item, spot-clean it. Save your washing machine from working into overdrive and be sensible with your clothing!

  • Only iron what’s necessary

Firstly, if you’re ironing your underwear – stop that. Only turn your iron on if necessary. There are also plenty of crease-releasing sprays on the market now that do a good enough job of smoothing your clothing items.

  • Unplug items

Use your weekly cleaning session to ensure all of your electrical items are unplugged, this will surprisingly save you a few extra pennies!

  • Wash your dishes

Give your dishwasher a break and use good old fashion elbow grease to clean your dishes. Hot, soapy water does the job just as well and will save you around £2.70 a week – and that’s only if you have it on once a day. If you don’t fancy digging out your marigolds, at least make sure when your dishwasher does go on it’s full!

  • Turn off your tumble dryer

Hang your clothes and let them air dry! This is most beneficial if you already have your heating on. For those who struggle with air drying, a heated clothes horse is another alternative. Especially as there’s no way we’re able to dry them outside, in this unpredictable weather! By plugging in your new airer and letting your clothes dry on the hot rails can save yourself up to 70p! It doesn’t sound a lot but considering a single tumble dryer cycle costs on average £1.53 and having a heated airer on for 8 hours costs £0.82, it’s worth making the switch.

  • Wash your clothes at 30 degrees

By reducing the temperature from 40 degrees to 30 on your washing machine you will use 38% less energy. This will help the colours stay intact too! Give it a try, it washes just as well.

  • Change the way you cook

Using an air fryer, slow cooker or microwave uses less energy than your oven. So, now’s the time to get creative with recipes and try alternative ways to cook.
