As a commercial cleaning company, we don’t come across many mattresses to clean except our own at home. Luckily, we’re able to use our cleaning expertise to keep our houses clean and where we can, we like to offer you advice on how to do so too! We know that mattresses may seem like a mission to clean but did you know that your mattress could be harbouring over 16 million bacteria? Thankfully, we have all the tips and tricks to get your mattress back up to standard for our peaceful night’s sleep.
- Remove everything from your bed i.e. pillows, and duvet. Then strip the bedsheets and pillowcases and put them in the laundry basket, ready for the wash.
- Everything should now have been removed from your bed, leaving you with a bare mattress. Put all your bed sheets, duvet cases, and pillowcases in the washing machine. Ensure you put them on a hot cycle to kill all the germs and dust mites that may be on them.
- Vacuum your mattress!
- If you have any fresh spills now is the time to address these by blotting with a damp cloth and disinfectant.
- Tackle any stains with your favourite stain removers. Alternatively, mix some baking soda with water to make a thick paste and use this as your stain remover.
- Sprinkle your mattress with baking soda and leave it for at least 30 minutes. This will absorb odour and moisture and make your bed fresher! The longer you leave the baking soda on the mattress the more it will clean, although please be aware if you have pets around it’s best to keep them away in case they ingest any.
- Vacuum the mattress again to get rid of all the baking soda.
- Air out the mattress, ideally letting fresh air into the room too! If possible open the curtains to let the sunshine in. UV rays will help kill bacteria and mould on the mattress.
- Flip and repeat on the other side of the mattress if necessary.
- Apply a mattress protector and clean sheets!
If you are using a memory foam mattress, be careful not to use any products that may be too harsh or clean too vigorously to ensure you don’t damage the mattress.
