We know our homes can be filled with funky smells from cooking, washing, and everyday living. And so, at Exeter Cleaning, we have come up with a list of tips to help get rid of those unwanted odours in your house.
1. Bins can produce the worst smells inside your home. The best way to ensure they don’t create a pong is to empty them regularly. Not only can the rubbish inside be creating a smell but the bin itself also needs looking after. Ways to prevent a smelly bin include cleaning it regularly (outside and in), using strong bin bags to prevent leaks and holes, and potentially investing in products like “Bin Buddy” etc. Also, always make sure you recycle and get rid of food waste appropriately!
2. Is your refrigerator smelly? Make sure you chuck out any out-of-date food and that all food items or leftovers are wrapped properly or secured with lids. Cleaning out your fridge regularly will help prevent odours too – read our previous blog post for tips and advice on how to do so.
3. Although most items in the bathroom can produce bad smells, we have to say our least favourite has to be the shower drain. It’s also our least favourite job to clean! However, regularly cleaning out the plug hole of your shower is a must! Make sure to use rubber gloves when getting rid of all that old hair!
4. If you have damp smells in your home invest in some scented dehumidifiers, designed to quickly remove dampness, improve air quality, and leave a fresh scent. These are an inexpensive and easy way to combat damp smells!
5. Odours can be produced from mattresses, carpets or upholstery – when cleaning these items baking soda will be your best friend. Baking soda absorbs bad smells when left and can then be vacuumed away. However, be careful not to use this around pets as it can be dangerous for them if consumed. 6. Open your windows and allow fresh air into your home. Consider washing your curtains with fresh-smelling fabric softener and allowing them to dry whilst hung up in front of the open window – we guarantee the room will be smelling divine!
7. Make sure there aren’t any smelly clothes laying around. Put them in the wash straight away!
